The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) is the organisation which represents the people with arthritis/rheumatism, health professionals (HPR) and scientific societies of rheumatology of all the European nations.
The aims of EULAR are to reduce the burden of rheumatic diseases on the individual and society and to improve the treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal diseases.
To this end, EULAR fosters excellence in education and research in the field of rheumatology. It promotes the translation of research advances into daily care and fights for the recognition of the needs of people with musculoskeletal diseases by the governing bodies in Europe.
EULAR is a non-profit scientific and educational association according to Swiss law; it is recognized as a tax-exempt charity by the tax authorities of the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland.
Scientific and Clinical Activities
EULAR fosters a multitude of activities in the field of research and supports projects in rheumatology by funding collaborative research between European rheumatology groups in fields that are in line with the mission, goals and strategies of EULAR.
Research project applications are reviewed and approved by the EULAR Executive Committee, and projects are run by specialist task forces, including patients, under the auspices of the relevant standing committee.
Clinical research projects lead to recommendations and criteria that are presented at the annual EULAR Congress and published in the EULAR journal, the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
In 2008, as an outflow of strategic planning, the Executive Committee decided to initiate an orphan disease research programme focusing on systemic sclerosis. Starting in early 2009, this 4-year programme regularly issued public calls for project proposals.
EULAR as an organisation does NOT fund research proposals but supports FOREUM Foundation for Research in Rheumatology.
The EULAR Standing Committees are set up to manage and perform the various activities of EULAR on behalf of the Executive Committee. Currently, eight standing committees are in place, covering the major areas of activity of EULAR. Standing committees provide a forum for specialists from all the European countries to meet and work together on specific projects. Projects are run by task forces of specialists in the field and overseen by the chairman of the relevant standing committee. The chairmen of the standing committees are ex-officio members of the EULAR Executive Committee.
